Notify your local school division. For home instruction under §22.1-254.1, provide annual notice by August 15, a subject list, and evidence of one of the four qualifying options. Midyear starters notify as soon as practicable and comply within 30 days of notice.
Provide evidence of progress.Submit qualifying test results or an accepted evaluation/assessment by August 1 after the school year. The statute provides an exception to this progress requirement for children under six on September 30.
Confirm the correct pathway.Virginia also has other attendance alternatives, including approved tutor and religious-exemption routes. Their rules differ. Confirm your route, required instruction, and documentation with your school division.
Compare the school’s actual program with your child’s learning, communication, and access needs. A disability label alone does not establish that a school is a suitable match.
